Mullah Omar's Mission Accomplished Moment?
Mullah Omar claims the Taliban are winning:
KABUL, Afghanistan -- The Taliban's shadowy leader has told Afghans that the insurgents are winning the war and warned Americans that they are wasting lives and billions in tax dollars by continuing in the conflict.
In an end-of-Ramadan message posted on jihadist websites and relayed by the Site Intelligence Group on Wednesday, Mullah Omar also said the Americans and their allies will soon leave the country. He urged his fighters to adhere to his code of conduct and avoid harming civilians -- instructions U.S. commanders say the Taliban frequently ignore.
The sad part: Omar isn't entirely wrong. I wouldn't characterize the Taliban as "winning", however they certainly aren't losing. There is a legitimate argument that our current strategy violates the doctrine of economy of force, thereby wasting funds and putting an undue amount of troops in harms way. We will soon be leaving (maybe) as we have a counterinsurgency strategy with an articulated time-line when really a limited counterterror force with specific missions and metrics might be more appropriate.
And even if his subordinates don't follow his orders, Omar clearly understands that the insurgency must maintain a sentiment amongst the population that supporting the coalition and Afghan national government is of lesser or no value to them.
Dispassionate analysis of Mullah Omar's comments doesn't completely rule out their legitimacy, and that is probably a sign that we are fighting this war wrong and that we could and should be fighting it differently. Hopefully, the U.S. can turn the fight around and make this Mullah Omar's very own embarrassing "Mission Accomplished" moment.
