Author Brad Matsen presents new research on the Titanic and why the ship sank so quickly. With the assistance of deep sea divers and ship wreck investigators, he contends that the ship’s construction was faulty. He surmises that the ship’s hull originally called for greater steel plating and bigger rivets. The result of a lighter ship allowed for a savings on weight and coal, but may have also been the reason for the ship's rapid demise.

Frank Yamasaki was in high school when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and his family was then forcibly interned along with other Japanese Americans at the Minidoka Relocation Center in Idaho. After losing a court case over his refusal to serve in the military, he was imprisoned at McNeil Island Penitentiary.

Friday, Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens announced that he’s retiring from the Court at the end of the term. C-SPAN recently interviewed Justice Stevens. He gave a guided tour of his Supreme Court chambers, talked about his life on the Court, and the role of a Supreme Court Justice. President Ford nominated Justice Stevens to the Court in 1975. He’s 89 years old and has served on the Court for 34 years.

Bart Stupak says he will retire from Congress after nine terms because he wants “to spend a little more time with my family” -- and who are we to question his reasoning? He says anyone who thinks he was intimidated by the death threats, harassing phone calls and assorted other abuse, or the vow by tea party activists and other Republicans to unseat him, simply doesn’t know him very well. The Michigan Democrat is a former state trooper from the Upper Peninsula, so there is no reason to assume he's a wimp.

After waiting 14 months for a confirmation vote that never came, Dawn Johnsen withdrew today as President Obama's nominee to head the Office of Legal Counsel.  As I documented at length when the nomination was first announced in January, 2009, Johnsen was an absolutely superb pick to head an office that plays as vital a role as any in determining the President's record on civil liberties and adherence to the rule of law.  With 59 and then 60 Democratic votes in the Senate all year long (which included the support of GOP Sen. Richard Lugar, though the opposition of Dem. Sen. Ben Nelson), it's extremely difficult to understand why the White House -- if it really wanted to -- could not have had Johnsen confirmed (or why she at least wasn't included in the spate of recently announced recess appointments).
